VETERINARY ACUPUNCTURE

Veterinary acupuncture has been practiced for thousands of years in China, there are textbooks dating back to these times showing veterinary treatment protocols using acupuncture. The ancient Chinese discovered 173 acupoints in animals.

 

Acupuncture is one the tools that Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) uses, it involves the insertion of sterile needles into specific points of the body to cause a therapeutic effect.

 

It can be used with other methods like electrical stimulation, moxibustion, etc. As mentioned previously.

 

The acupuncture points are called: “Shu-xue”.

 

Acupuncture points have electrical resistance, conductivity, they have got a high density of free nerve endings, arterioles, lymphatic vessels, mast cells and more.

 

They are located in 14 meridians or channels :

 

LU, HT, PC, SP, LIV, KID, CV 

LI, SI, TH, ST, GB, BL, GV 

 

The meridians are a flow system of energy, in a normal situation the energy flows all the time from one acupuncture point to another.

 

The other three components of the TCM are: Herbal Medicine, Food Therapy and Tui-na.

Therapeutic effects

  • It´s a very safe medical procedure when a Certified Veterinary acupuncturist adminiters it.
  • It doesn´t usually hurt; the needles are very thin. Around 95% of the patients will enjoy the treatment, relax, and even fall asleep.

  • The treatment can last from 20 to 60 min depending on different factors.

  • Every animal is different so they will need different number of treatments.

  • You can see some results very quickly, even the same day, but for chronic cases usually takes a bit longer to see long-lasting improvement.

By stimulating an acupuncture point we produce physiological changes in the body trying to find the balance that heals it.

 

Modern Studies show evidence on how acupuncture works, showing some of the following effects:

  • Pain relief – induces the increase of endogenous opioids and endorphins, serotonin, norepinephrine. Effective for osteoarthritis and musculoskeletal pain.
