I have studied Chinese Veterinary Phytotherapy with Dr Gomez Alonso, a Spanish Veterinary Expert in Chinese Medicine.

 

To use the right herbs for our patient we need to perform an accurate diagnosis, which is based on the personality of the animal, the pulses, and the colour of the tongue.

 

Once we have got the diagnosis we treat a pattern, taking the herbs daily is like having acupuncture every day – we are treating the same issue the same way because of the diagnosis.

 

There are herbs that will treat deficiency and others that target excess, that is the way of Chinese medicine: the Ying and the Yang.

 

It is necessary to recheck the pattern on the patient after taking the herbs for a while.

 

They are powerful, so it is important to remember that they can cause diarrhoea and vomiting (in rare occasions, but it can happen) so we need to be aware and stop the herbs if either of these side effects occur.
